That said , I did introduce the gates at Longwood with modest expectations , but leave inspire and pleasantly surprised with the nobleness that beautiful architecture and vintage glass houses with mature plants can rescue . I was most impressed with the water lily ( another Wiley Post to get along ) , the outdoor bedding industrial plant displays ( large swath of multiple , with perhaps a hundred plant of one variety in borders that must have been 500 feet long ) , and mostly , with the old , horticulturalness of the turn - of - the - 100 greenhouses .
The authoritative , Methedrine and wood greenhouse at Longwood are magnificent . Others may like the conservatories and formal planting , but I wish the behind - the - picture area well . I ca n’t think of another word , but peradventure gestalt is best – whitewash , erstwhile glass , blade and wood , ancient clay pot – it ’s why poly hoop houses are just not the same as a steam - pipe , live water heat glasshouse with slashed peak crops growing under the shining sunshine – it ’s all part of why many us take to keep a glass house . I hazard to say that the working glasshouse at Longwood are the best part of the visit .
Most views at Longwood are iconic , conversant to any gardener who has read a magazine or book about American Horticulture . Still , visiting any address in soul , is far more impressive that any image can capture .

Hundred twelvemonth old Yews ( Taxus sp ) in the topiary garden are nearly twenty foot tall , and a favorite of visitors to the garden .
Outside of the conservatory , the water lily garden is most impressive .
