Paul has designed the newspaper headline Show Garden for BBC Gardeners ’ World Live 2023,A Garden Fit for a King , which strike off the Coronation of HM The King Charles III . The Show Garden is instigate by the garden and Arboretum at Highgrove in Gloucestershire , and celebrates His Majesty ’s passion for horticulture and the environment .

Paul Stone’sA Garden Fit for a Kingwill be at BBC Gardeners ’ World Live at the Birmingham NEC from 15th-18thJune 2023 .

The Interview

At 15 m x 15 m , A Garden Fit for a King will larger than most Chelsea Main Avenue Show Gardens . However , this Show Garden ’s ethos seek to be all about works and people live simply and harmoniously , side by side . As a result of this theme , the contentedness is deliberately simplistic and designed to leave a modest carbon footmark in its creation at BBC Gardeners ’ World Live 2023 . The display is enliven by Highgrove ’s horticulture ambitions and projects but does not set out to simulate any characteristic in the gardens there . Instead , I have mixed Highgrove elements into one scene that tells the tarradiddle of an approach to horticulture and support that is all about investment funds in the environment , the honey of plant , and the ensue benefit to us all at so many levels .

I ’ve met the then Prince Charles on a turn of occasions and his dedication and love of horticulture is without enquiry . I felt the biggest protection I could give in celebration of his Coronation would be to concentrate and accredit his specific donation to his renovation of the Highgrove Gardens and the result shock on the horticulture residential area . Back in 1980 , the then Prince Charles voiced and demonstrated his cacoethes for naturalist and environmentally - friendly gardening . Also , for using the land to the welfare of the great unwashed , wildlife and plants at a time when sustainability was not on the agendum for most agricultural and horticultural undertaking and activities . He pick up a fate of criticism from many fourth part with vested interests in land management . There was also an effort to ridicule his clear avocation that it was all round a good thing to talk to flowers , to hug and shake hands with a tree , and whisper good luck to a Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree when you plant it . Any true nurseryman will recognize this association with people and plants . History has evidence that by stand up and speak honestly about such thing , HRH The King has made a brave and big contribution to education and public perceptual experience of how an individual has responsibility to themselves and the world around them .

The standout feature ofA Garden Fit for a Kingwill be that everything in it has a plug in intention and design . Habitats for sun and nuance , ironical and damp , trees and wildflowers , all compound for a mise en scene that is good for the soul but also for the living thing that support and are affirm within . I have heard HRH The King say that a very of import affair about Highgrove , about what he does there and what I trust him to be recommending to us all – is to trust in Nature . It ’s significant to me thatA Garden Fit for a Kingdelivers this message .

The Woodland ecosystem is another of the King ’s rage . A Garden Fit for a Kinggives a nod to that with a range of classic native timberland trees on display let in Cherry and Beech but is also inspired by the Highgrove Arboretum collection . It is a feature of speech of the Highgrove Garden planting manner that there is aid to detail with add note value for ornamental pastime and effect . At Highgrove , the Arboretum arrest many non - native species and in our display , Magnolia and Nipponese Maple are typical of what you will see at Highgrove , flux into the planting intercellular substance . My resourcefulness of trees is from Hillier medical specialist tree diagram nursery and I assure some fine specimen will be on show in this garden !

The honor winning wildflower hayfield at Highgrove remember the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth ’s 60thanniversary are realize in our display . They are of class a cardinal chemical element of sustainable , environmentally - favorable gardening . A Garden Fit for A Kingwill have a carpet of annual and recurrent wildflower and grasses in profusion . Beneath the trees in dry shady area , Campanula , Digitalis , Geranium and Lamium are included . In subject sunny spot , Achillea , Knautia , and Hawkweed will be amongst the perennials . Most of these plants will come up from British Wildflower Plants Ltd of Norfolk . The annuals Cornflower , Echium , Corn Marigold , Ox oculus Daisy will be amongst many one-time favourites on exhibit . The annuals are being grown in 500 tray and will be fork up to the NEC by specialist glasshouse Kernock Plants Ltd in Cornwall and delivered by articulated camion one calendar week before the show opens on 15thJune . It ’s all about pollenation , bees , worm and regeneration of the land . Requiring no chemical , fertilizer or insect powder , the land is enriched with its own cps and enhanced by sympathetic maintenance that mostly involves cutting down vegetation once or twice a twelvemonth and removing the arisings to wield low soil fertility rate . Around the boggy Reed bottom Withy , more specialist wildflower like Hemp Agrimony and the beating-reed instrument Phragmites will look in the role of sewage pee filtration treatment , turning ammonia to nitrates just like at Highgrove . Centrally there is a curve grass lawn pathway and open place but this will also include mintage of wildflower that do n’t mind being mown on a regular basis like vetch , Achillea millefolium and Daisy .

Fit for a King FINAL

Just as in gardening , HRH The King has had his well - publicised view on architecture under scrutiny in the past . His spiritual campaign against vast blank neutral building – “ monstrous carbuncles”- has been another part of his contribution to public perception . InA Garden Fit for a King , I have include a simple traditional Bothy building within the landscape . This adorable garden feature is greatly inspired by the manufacturer ’ site which states : “ Designers and builders of special spaces for especial places . A symmetrical merger between landscape painting and computer architecture drives our antecedent heritage style , whilst being super kind to the environment . ” The Bothy is made whole from natural stone and timber . Visitors will be capable to go inwardly and see its in full - render bedchamber , kitchen and sofa . This garden building is unique in that it is available to the public in pre - build kit form . It will be delivered to the show ready - made and craned into position ! No on - site building , no waste and everything slay back to the showroom at the end of BBC Gardeners ’ World Live . We go for it encounter with HRH ’s approval !

Alongside my specialist team , I am hoping that I will meet up again with some quondam friends and collaborationist who have help me in the past and achieved great study and high award Show Gardens . Wildflower expert Paul Pulford from the charity Providence Road Homeless Association will be in charge of that part of the project . Paul has influence with me at two Chelsea Flower Shows and in 2016 at BBC Gardeners ’ World Live when we planted a meadow in front of a narrow boat channel scene . He and I were both involved in the creation of the roof garden on the Queen Elizabeth Hall Southbank London where today he continues to assist other excluded people get benefit from gardening and horticulture with his London - based Grounded Ecotherapy horticulture squad . Also Liz Brace from Knowle who has serve me on two garden with assistant from her blossom from the Farm connections . I am also hoping that the Solihull Mind horticulture squad that process on my 2018 Show Garden at BBC Gardeners ’ World Live will join the planting squad this time around . BBC Gardeners ’ World Live is peculiar at enabling me to give opportunity to individuals who really get inspiration and personal wellbeing from lend to the creation of such a project .

Just as I find car upkeep abysmal , I revalue that horticulture is a big challenge in its complexness . I am front to inspire just by using beautiful plants in great combining . I want people to challenge what a ‘ weed ’ actually is and look at that any plant life great or minor can be an authoritative contributor to an ecosystem . I would like mass to try out with wildflowers which are easy to make and then pick up how to maintain long term which is slick . My provider , British Wild Flower Plants , Kernock Plants , Pictorial Meadows Ltd and Hillier Nurseries will be able to aid on that . I would like people to debate that perfect cut grass lawn are not a great idea in these changing times and that there is an opportunity to contribute to the surroundings in most outdoor spaces – with a bottom line motto and belief – to hope in Nature – and seat in it . Some favorable mass may wish to own the beautiful Bothy and the provider , Bonnie Boltholes Ltd , would be delighted to aid with that . see plant ferment to a clear purpose like the reed bed filtration system may also urge on some and we will have a composting organisation on display . I hope that the combination of all the facet and contents of the Show Garden will encourage the approximation of garden without artificial , manmade products and will promote organic , sustainable enquiry and drill .
