More incredible bearded irises from a California garden
Stuart Boone recently sent in some exposure of the many incredible bearded iris diaphragm in his friend , Mary ’s , garden in Red Bluff , California . If you escape the first post , it ishere . Today , he ’s shared another lot of these over - the - top flowers that are so appropriately cite after the goddess of the rainbow !
This variety is called ‘ Coastal Memories ’ and what a thoroughgoing name ! The nearly white petal flush to purple at their root , create a striking compounding of colouring that demands tight review .
There are many form of whiskered iris that are such a benighted purple they are nearly black , as here . Often these very dark colors can get lost in the garden , so they can be advantageously appreciate in a vase ( whiskery iris make wonderful deletion peak ) . Or one can put them , as here , where they are back - alight by the sun to show off their rich pigmentation .

‘ Mary Francis ’ is one of the many soft , pale blue bearded iris variety .
‘ Mr. Moonlight ’ has incredible , absolutely pure white flowers . The form and shape of these blooms also epitomizes what we have seen in modern barbate iris nurture . Older variety lean to have thin petals with flat , unornamented edge . Newer hybrids , like this , have thicker , more substantial petals , and spendthrift ruffles and frills on the petal edges . Which you prefer is a subject of taste . If you wish these ruffled shape , look for mixture introduced after around 1995 . For plainer forms , look for historical potpourri , particularly those bring out before the 1960s and ’ 70s . Sometimes , the good place to find elderly varieties is in the gardens of Quaker , as many of them are no longer sell in catalogs .
