Growing gardens in parking lots or other urban sphere is not a novel concept , but Joe Kovach , a horticulturist at Ohio State University , is studying ways to make it more fertile .
An older mineral pitch parking lot might not seem like a proficient billet for a garden . But in urban area it can be .

Joe Kovach , an Ohio State University expert on lowly - scale gardening who specializes in maximizing yield and veggie product in limited space , is investigating path to garden in empty , abandoned parking wad . In a three - year study , he will compare plants grown in jumbo - sized commode , in elicit beds set on blacktopping , and in trenches cut into blacktop .
“ There are a passel of vacant parking lot in places like Cleveland and Youngstown , ” say Kovach , who holds a joint appointment with Ohio State University Extension . “ We ’re hop to learn if the deep act , if the pots are worth it , and of all three techniques , which is the proficient . ”
His workplace could boost the use of abandoned urban land , helping the great unwashed who live in urban food comeuppance — areas having little or no access to affordable , nutritious foods — grow more of their own tomatoes , spinach plant and other fresh produce . And it could help them do it more easily .

Turning blacktopping unripe is n’t a newfangled construct , but Kovach wants to see if there ’s a better manner to do it . Parking - slew gardeners unremarkably use heighten beds , bottomless Natalie Wood or plastic box seat that reside on a bed of wood chips . Some growers tear out the asphalt instead . They “ First State - pave ” the intact parking lot and plant in the ground .
Kovach require to see if First State - pave only the trenches is a simple yet rich option ; if waist - high pots are easier to tend than ankle- or knee - mellow conjure bed ; and what sort of freezing , dry out or overheating problem might go up in any of the organization . He ’ll wait at yields , plague and high tunnels , as well .
“ I do n’t recollect anyone else is doing this bonkers research , quite candidly , ” he says . “ [ Starting it ] seemed like a good approximation at the time . ”
Sprouting an Idea
Kovach ’s idea for the work emerge when hard work and opportunity collided .
He recently complete a six - class study of fruit and vegetable polyculture in which dozens of big , healthy Malus pumila Tree , mantrap tree , raspberry plants and blueberry bush bushes were grown . He did n’t require to see the plants go to waste , so he used some of them to establish a polyculture presentment site in the lawn of a recently close dormitory at OSU ’s Agricultural Technical Institute . The respite of the plant were plant in the residence hall ’s parking circle to start his unexampled study .
“ We ’re trying to amount up with different mode to employ asphalt like this , ” Kovach says . “ rather of saying , ‘ It ’s knock off country , rent ’s pull it all up , ’ we ’re saying , ‘ allow ’s figure a manner we can utilize it . ' ”
In October 2010 , the trenches were trim , the pots were bought ( smutty , credit card and the size of it of a modest spicy tub ) , the soil - mixture materials were gathered , and the fruit trees and flora were transfer . The final planting of extra crop as well as the induction of an irrigation system and six high tunnels will take spot this spring .
3 Garden Systems
For the study , the plantings will be replicated in each of the three systems .
In the first garden system , apples , peaches , blueberry and blackberry will be maturate in the giant pots ; deep - rooted vegetables , such as Lycopersicon esculentum , in normal - sized bucket with drain cakehole ; and shoal - rooted crop , such as green beans and strawberry , in wide of the mark gutter hung on cattle panel . Of the three garden system , this is highest off the ground , and Kovach will attempt to determine if this higher system equate to easygoing aid .
In the second garden organisation , the deep , Kovach will see if tearing up only part of the parking spate is a viable option . All the fruit and vegetables , admit the fruit trees , will mature in 3- by 30 - foundation trenches cut out of the asphalt . A low raised bed will surround each trench , arouse the deep ’s sides thus make a deeper pitfall for constitute and making it easier for gardeners to reach .
In the third garden system , all the crops will be grown in 30 - inch - high raised seam go down on top of the asphalt . Hitting at about stifle - height , they ’ll be higher than the trench beds but lower than the pots . The bottom 15 inch of each bed will contain Grant Wood chips for drainage and height .
All three systems will use the same soil commixture : Grant Wood chips , compost , sand and topsoil in a 4:2:1:1 ratio , respectively . piece of all three systems , too , will spring up beneath high tunnels to shape if mineral pitch seizure and retain enough heat to be rich in the spring and to make a difference inside the tunnels`1 .
The polyculture demonstration internet site will serve up as a study restraint for the garden systems on the mineral pitch .
“ There are still a lot of issue to be addressed , but if this research is successful , kingdom that was pave and consider unusable for nutrient can become productive again , ” Kovach enjoin .
