Foraging Mullein
I love it when a plant that I ’ve seen for year , and is totally recognizable to most people , turns out to be a super awing medicinal .
That ’s what it was like for me when I “ discovered”plantain , a flora that I ’ve hear under my bare feet since puerility . I was all amazed at what this humble industrial plant that most masses deem a “ weed ” could do .
Then , many year ago , an old hippie booster of mine noticed a large mullein plant growing near where I lived in Yosemite . He bring up Native Americans and how you could smoke it and I thought it sounded cool , but to be fair , I did n’t really give it a 2nd cerebration .

But now , as I ’ve learned more and more about medicinal herbs over the past few years , I ’ve really been stunned about what I ’ve learn about mullein . And , luckily for all of us , foraging for mullein is usually quite easy !
Identifying Mullein
Mullein is an extremely recognizable plant once you know what to look for . I ’m sure you ’ve see it growing on roadsides or in other disturbed areas .
The most detectable part of this plant is the tall scandalmongering flush spike that blooms from mid to late summertime .
The mullein bloom in the picture above was belike two foot taller than me ! This is what makes mullein most placeable in the summer , but if you look closely in spring you will notice the head start of what will be full fully grown mullein one day .

A small , foggy leaved , rosette of leaf that are close to the ground is how mullein starts its lifespan . It is actually a biennial plant life , so it stays like this until the 2d year of growing when it shoots up the tall flush spike .
Uses for Mullein
That bloom spike has a lot of medicinal exercise , including being antiseptic , pain in the neck relieving and infection fighting belongings .
Anoil infusionmade with mullein flush has been traditionally used to helptreat ear infections .
you could purchasedried mullein flowersfrom Mountain Rose Herbs if you ca n’t find any in the natural state or if it ’s not the right season .

The leaves are super muzzy and balmy and can develop to quite a expectant size .
They have become somewhat known in the outdoor community as “ nature ’s toilet paper ” . Ca n’t say that I differ with that !
The leaves also have a high level of medicinal value .

Mullein leave are both an antispasmotic and and expectorant . This makes them extremely good to the respiratory system as a decongestant and even for bronchial asthma .
The leaves can also be used as a poultice for swollen glands , bruise , insect bites and other minor complaint . It would make a undecomposed addition to anherbal balm .
Mullein leaves can be dried to use throughout the year . you could also purchase driedmullein leaffrom Mountain Rose Herbs .

Because of their respiratory benefit , mullein leaves are often smoke , surprisingly enough , along with other herbs .
The leaves and flush can also be made into a heal tea .
It ’s so squeamish to have readily available , easy to identify , highly medicinal plants that can be wildcrafted . Mullein has the practiced of all of these quality , thankfully !

I do n’t know if I ’ll be smoking it any sentence before long , but I will definitely be compile its leaves and flowers to dry out for use throughout wintertime .
I may even make a velvet plant infused oil color for exercise in a salve , or even on its own as an capitulum infection treatment .
I even interpret that in ancient sentence when the bloom spikes dried up they would be dipped in tallow and used as a Verbascum thapsus lantern . There are so many coolheaded uses for this plant life !
