Deer and turkeys and poor soil don’t stop this gardener
My name is Fran . My husband and I live on Martha ’s Vineyard , an island off the coast of Massachusetts . I have gardened most of my life but have intensely garden since I retired four years ago . Most of my flower beds are partly or to the full shaded , and there is a bombastic universe of deer and fantastic turkeys on the island . The deer eat many“deer - resistant ” plants , and the Republic of Turkey jab upsmall plants . The sandy and Lucius DuBignon Clay soil is also a challenge . But I revel gardening vastly ! These photograph were take over two year and during spring and summertime .
One of Fran ’s outpouring flower bed , with blooming lupine ( Lupinuspolyphyllus , Zones 2–7 ) and digitalis ( Digitalispurpurea , Zones 4–8 ) , among other perennials .
Bigleaf hydrangea(Hydrangeamacrophylla , Zones 5–9 ) with bountiful flock of pink flower . This shrub is a classic for island and seaboard garden , as it is tolerant of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks atomizer and likes the moderate temperature during the winter .

Purple coneflowers ( Echinaceapurpurea , Zones 3–9 ) , prime well - have it away by gardeners andpollinatorsalike , produce seminal fluid that goldfinches and other birds bed to run through once the peak wither .
By growing this genus Funka in a pot on the porch steps , Fran was able to outwit the cervid so far this summer ! The pottedbegonia(annual ) in front bloom in the shade all summer .
Another pot , filled withpetuniasandcalibrachoa(both yearly )

More annual raft wreak color all summer .
The autumn fern ( Dryopteriserythrosora , Zones 5–8 ) has green foliation in the summer but is peculiarly striking in the outpouring , when the new growth comes out a beautiful bronze colour .
