Visiting a master of garden design
We ’re back enjoy more photos of Cherry Ong ’s visit lastJuneto the garden of perennial gardening expert Pam Frost in Vancouver , Canada . Cherry visited as part of a tour coordinate by theVancouver Hardy Plant Society .
Here are some expertcombinationsin color andcontrast . The dark - leaved smoke bush ( Cotinuscoggygria , Zones 5–8 ) in the back makes a strong contrast to lighter foliage and to flowers in shades of yellow , yellowish unripened , and white .
Contrasting texture and form is key to an exciting garden design . Here we see bold leaves contrasting with hunky-dory ones , and the courtly shape of a perfectly trimmed shrub counterpoint with the intimate plantings around it . No heyday , or even brightly coloredfoliage , are needed here to make a beautiful pattern .

Each of theseplantersgoing up the whole step uses unlike plants but echo the same colors — reddish and pinkish flower , contrast with silver gray and white foliage . Using similarterra - cotta potsfor each planting further unifies this area .
Epimedium(Zones 5–9 ) have delicate beautiful flowers in the fountain , but their genuine time value in the garden is their long - hold up leaf , which can look ticklish but is quite tough and does well in difficult sites likedry shade .
Moss , wood , stone , andferns — simple and perfect

It is loose to overlookhostasas uncouth and overplanted , but there are upright reason they are used so much : they ’re long-lasting , easy to grow , and their foliage is just beautiful .
This Solomon ’s seal ( Polygonatumsp . ) has variegation so graceful it looks like it was paint .
Cardiocrinum(Zones 5–9 ) are lily relatives that thrive in awoodland gardenand , after many years of solitaire , farm towering stems of immense lily-white efflorescence .

Lily bud are quick to burst open , with a sodding background of variegate locoweed .
