Hop-Happy Teas

Last weekend at our Celebrate Hops, Herb of the Year 2018 event at the US National Arboretum, we served lots of hop infusions and some herb tea blends and folks liked them so much, I’m posting a few of the recipes here.

Folks who attended our hoppy upshot were able to try out a turn of hop infusions made with different hops so that they could try the difference in the kinds of hops . All skip try out bitter at first , however some are fruity ranging from citrus tree like orange , Citrus paradisi , lime , lemon tree and even pineapple . Some are more tropic like a mango or melon tree . Others taste more resiny or piney , while there are also grassy and vegetal tastes .

Since the flavors are so varied , we like to practice different hop for unlike beverages , often merge them with other ingredients to make them more palatable and less bitter . I find that hops sour well with all citrus fruit and specially like them with oranges , though lemon and limes are good if you add a bit of sweetening . I like honey , maple syrup or agave to dulcify , although sugar can be used . Stevia also works , though it too impart a bitterness , so you get a threefold curse when blend with hops .

All of the lemon herbaceous plant blend well with hop ; I feel that lemon balm makes a nice taste jazz group and is doubly reposeful before bedtime . Spearmint or peppermint and hops make a pleasant digestive blend , as does the addition of camomile . Orange mint is quite delicious with record hop and some slice orangeness . Spice is skillful too – I like a snatch of ginger with hops – and the fruitiness of crushed cilantro seed is quite fun and tasty .

Here is the recipe that I served at the USNA and the 2d formula was what the peeress served from the Pennsylvania Unit – sort of a hop lemonade .

Citrus and Hops Tea

In my reading I used hop , lemon balm , oranges and orange blossom honey – and call down in just a piddling coarsely ground coriander seed seed .

make 1 QUART4 tablespoon dried hops6 teaspoons fresh or dried lemon verbena , lemon balm , or lemon thyme1 quart boiling water1 orange , lemon , or lime , slice into circlesCombine dried hops and lemon herbs in teapot , teaball , French press , or infuser . Pour stewing urine over and reserve to steep for 5 to 10 minutes . Strain and serve ardent or iced . Garnish with citrus circles .

Hops Shandy TeaMAKES 3 CUPS1 cupful hop-skip tea2 cups lemonade ( or 1 cup lemonade and 1 loving cup gamboge seltzer)1/2 stinker , sliced into circlesSprig of mint , lemon verbena or stinker thymeMake a loving cup of hops tea ( see above ) , filter and cool to board temperature . In a looking glass pitcher , combine hops tea with lemonade , sum up frappe , and stir well . Garnish with lemon slices and herbal sprigs .
