Newly built backyard garden pond
Getting Started
I ’ve possess several pond over the twelvemonth but this is the first larger in - ground pool I have ramp up . I ’ll show you how I build up it by myself and some tricks I pick up along the means .
The pool show is approximately 8×10 - feet with depths ranging from 2 to 4 - feet .
The pool was build using akit from Aquascapewhich came with everything I needed other than the rocks which were ordered one by one from a landscape gardening party .

I really did n’t experience if this was something I could do ( one mediocre eye - ripened cleaning woman ) but I just followed the instructions that came with the kit and sure enough , it all work out .
The most challenging part was get the rock in place , because some of them were very sullen — C of hammering , I ’m guessing — but I came up with a unspoilt way to make my tools do the threatening lifting ( as you ’ll see below ) and it ended up being fine . No back melody here !
I ’ll walk you through the intact building physical process so you may see what you ’re in for if you choose to build your own backyard fish pond .

Choose the Right Size & Location
One of the most common regrets after building a pond is wishing it was full-grown and/or in dissimilar location .
If you’re able to , build the largest size you’re able to manage that fit your infinite and ability to hold it .
And put the pond where you will savour it . I ’m not sure why but so many gardeners resolve to put their pool room at the back of the railway yard where it is neglected and rarely enjoy .

A location near to your terrace or deck or within view of a business firm window is a much better choice .
In the right place , it will become a much - loved focal spot of your garden .
Building a Pond Step-by-Step
I was forewarned before of sentence that it could take up to 50 60 minutes to establish a pond this size ( 8′ x 11′ with a minimal profoundness of 2 foot ) . It actually cease up taking just 25 hours include a destiny of breaks , for hiss view and air castle , as I am prone to do . And I ensure you , I am a well-chosen worker but by all odds not fast nor am I exceptionally strong .
A good pond kitcomes with elaborated pedagogy to take the air you through the entire operation .
I learned how to make this style of pondusing the picture here at Aquascape . The overview I ’m put up here is just that — a brief overview . If you ’re build a pond , be trusted to consult your kit instructions for specific guideline .

In accession to the pool kit , the only material needed were rocks ( large , intermediate , and crushed rock ) , and aquatic plant .
This video walk through the process of building my pond .
1Plan the Pond Shape and Flow
In the photograph ( below ) you may see the blanched abstract — done with baking flour — marking an 8 x 11 - groundwork area . I next used a farsighted electrical cord to design the actual shape of the pond within these limit .
Pond kitscome with teaching that will help you plan the water flow . I decide to locate the waterfall at the far end , and the Panama hat with the submergible ticker ( that give back the water to the waterfall ) at the near side where there is entree to an outdoor electric sales outlet .
2Dig the Pond
This step took about 4 hours . Our dirt is very flaxen which makes digging as easy as it could be , but , it was a really hot twenty-four hours so I took a circumstances of breaks to avoid overheating . If you have clay soil , be prepared for it to take a lot longer or hire help for this dance step .
It ’s helpful to have the big ikon planned out beforehand of clip so you do n’t finish up having to move that grease more than necessary . I used some of the excavated soil to make a shoulder around the falls . The rest of the soil was used to fill sometall raised beds .
The most important task is to position the waterfall , skimmer , and pipe connecting them where they will be most effective .

The long browned thing ( photo , above ) is in reality a piece of downspout that I used as a surface to place my level on , see to it that the sides of the pool and inside ledge were level and the desired depths .
This pond is two animal foot deep at it ’s deep point which sounded too shallow to me until I saw it in home and it ’s in reality a overnice deepness . Make certain you do n’t surpass the measure your pool kit permits or you ’ll move out of lining .
I opt to have one ledge around 3/4 of the pond and leave the rest assailable at full deepness . You ’ll see this in the next photos .

3Add the Liners
pool kits ( like the one I used from Aquascape ) come with two liner : a textile one , which goes down first , and the waterproof one .
This is when you start seeing what the pool will actually look like .
4Add Rocks
The first thing people ask is , how did you lift all of those rocks? It ’s a honest doubt . I ’m told they weighed a whopping 5 tons — that ’s 10,000 lbs — which sounds crazy but I had a secret weapon and figured out a direction to make it even easier .
First of all , do n’t lift them ! I used a in force hand trolley ( also forebode ahand cart ) . Mine is designed to hold up to 600 lb ( much more than these rocks weigh ) , and it wholly did the oink work .
Be sure to wear protective gear wheel let in sword - toed iron boot and boxing glove with right traveling bag and allow gravity do the employment .

The pond rocks were deliver on pallet at the front of our menage so I did have to move them some distance to the backyard . I just force each rock ‘n’ roll off the pile onto the driveway . Some gritty backbone on the private road made it light to spin and roll them onto the paw cart .
From there , I ’d push the hand go-cart to the pond and knock down them in . Once in the pool , it was easy to move them where I desire them .
Honestly , I thought I might have to hire someone for this step , but , once I taste the manus cart and the gritty sand trick , it was way easier than I expected .

The walls of the pool and waterfall country are line with the bigger rock . The bottom , ledge , and gap between the rocks are fill up with crushed rock .
Moving the rocks took a couple of 2 - 3 minute sessions .
In the photo , you may see I place a board over the waterfall bin ( at the far last ) to forfend getting dirt and stones in there . The bucket were used to move and rain cats and dogs the gravel .

5Ensure Everything is Level and Add Water
I mentioned antecedently that you need thing to be floor for the pond to see right . weewee will always raze itself , of course , so you need the surroundings to also come out story .
Before I fasten the waterfall and skimmer bank identification number in shoes , I made sure they were on upstanding land and matched the mensuration in the kit instructions .
I was eager ( and preposterously neural ) to append the water and call on the pump on for the first sentence . That would be the moment of trueness .

I ring my married man to witness the large minute ( turn on the pump ) and it was rather anticlimactic because the water flowed beautifully . you’re able to see this historic import in the television ( above ) if you ’re interested .
I was also sunnily surprised to discover that the pump itself is very quiet : the only speech sound you learn is water precipitate . utter !
6Plants and Landscaping
You ’ll notice in the photos that there is pond liner visible around the perimeter of the pond — this is not the intended recollective - term expression . For now , I ’m adding plants I have on hand and enshroud all of the bare soil with mulch . Over time , I ’ll add many more plants , some stones , and ground covers to fill everything in . Just like any new addition to the garden , only time can make it wait like it has been there all along .
I also have a fun idea planned for the waterfall covering — which needs to persist accessible — continue tuned for that .
Here ’s the pool with some aquatic plants added .

Aquatic Plants in This Pond
When choosing pond plant , get a local seller and decide whether you require audacious and/or tropical plants . I chose dauntless plant life , with the exception of some of the float plant life , that will survive in the pool twelvemonth - round . Tropical works will need to be stored elsewhere for the wintertime .
These are deemed non - invasive in my area ( southern Ontario ):

As expected , the birds immediately pop using the pond . I ’m wait to see if the frogs and batrachian from the other little pond decide to move over here . And I also mean to get Pisces the Fishes .

The pool is obviously new and it will take some fourth dimension for it to search more ‘ naturalized ’ , but even now I altogether love it .

It ’s become everyone ’s favorite spot to sit and decompress as the waterfall spills down .
If you are take build your own pool , I trust you found this encouraging .
The excavation and moving rocks is hard work , but it did n’t take nearly as long as I thought , and every step was manageable with the instructions , my hand trolley car , and few helpful tip .
