Are you quick to run for gaga mushroom … safely ?
Since I ’ve gotten on a mushroom gripe , I ’ve been doing a LOT of fungal reading and have larn a good numeral of new books for my subroutine library so I can ID mushroom cloud , specially edible mushrooms .
Below are some of the ones I ’ve been enjoying thus far , along with their Amazon links ( remember , if you decide to buy anything on Amazon … fall into place through one of my links and I ’ll make a few pennies ) .

All That the Rain Promises and More: A Hip Pocket Guide to Western Mushrooms
Though I ’m in Florida there ’s a lot of bleed over in mushroom-shaped cloud species from the west coast . Even if that was n’t the case , this script is worth buying just because David Arora is splendid and hilarious .
You would n’t remember that a mushroom templet would be funny , but this one is a sidesplitter . I was laughing out loud and wake my wife up .
Here ’s the more in - deepness Word from Arora that ’s a must - have for serious wild mushroom-shaped cloud aficionados :
Mushrooms Demystified
Mushrooms Demystifiedis a goodish leger with a short ton of information in it . Very deserving having , if pretty unwieldy . It ’s also packed with snarky jokes and visual laugh , despite its scientific lineage . I really like David Arora ’s piece of writing and dateless exuberance .
For the person just interested in getting take up with edible mushrooms , here ’s another option :
100 Edible Mushrooms
Micheal Kuo is n’t intimately as fun as David Arora and some across as a petty persnickety after the savage exuberance of “ All That the Rain promise , ” however,100 Edible Mushroomsis in - profundity and thoughtful , plus it ’s easier to dive into than a tome such asMushrooms Demystified . It also has recipes . I own it and have been enjoying picking my room through it .
Now if you ’re ready to come to the flying field , I ’ve found this guide to be the good so far :
National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms (National Audubon Society Field Guides)
This guide was actually written by the brainy mushroom hunter Gary Lincoff and the expertness shines through . It ’s well - organized and bear first-class photograph in color , unlike the black and white of most of the photos inMushrooms Demystified . Gary Lincoff also wrote this book , which I own as well :
The Complete Mushroom Hunter: An Illustrated Guide to Finding, Harvesting, and Enjoying Wild Mushrooms
The Complete Mushroom Hunterwill satisfy you with hullabaloo for the hunt . It was the first book of account I read after Paul Stamet ’s must - read bookMycellium Runningand it really campaign me out the door .
Speaking of Paul Stamets , here ’s a data link to his book :
Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World
at long last , do n’t draw a blank to get a transcript ofCommon Florida Mushroomsfrom the UF bookstore !
Over the last hebdomad I ’ve eaten bolete , chanterelles , puffballs , threeLactarius indigos , plus I picked an “ Old Man of the Woods ” yesterday which I ’ll be corrode for breakfast today .
I ’m feel rich – I ’ve never been capable to afford to rust as many mushroom as I ’d like … and here they ’ve been growing under my pes all the time and I was too scared . Armed with oodles of understand textile and guide I ’m no longer afraid – and it ’s not like I ’m take risk ! None of the mintage I ’ve eaten has any dangerous lookalikes that ca n’t be weed out with a cursory exam of the mushroom in question .

Grab some books and give it a go yourself !
