Sempervivums are not hard to grow , provided they are not waterlogged and killed from surplus watering . They can be easily grown out of doors and in container , and they realise the name " Houseleeks " from their trend to rootle on the ceiling of home . After the female parent plant flowers , it will of course die , but by this metre , the plant has in all likelihood develop many offsets that will proceed to grow . These are excellent for cold window . Sempervivumearned their democratic name , Hens and Chicks , from their growth habit . The female parent works , or hen , sends off numerous offsets , which will cluster around her foundation like biddy . These offsets can be easy repot , or the plants can be left to form a clunking mat .
Repot as needed , rather during the warm season . To repot a succulent , ensure the soil is teetotal before repotting , then mildly move out the potentiometer . Knock away the old soil from the roots , removing any rotted or dead roots . Treat any cut with a fungicide . come out the plant in its new pot and backfill it with potting soil , propagate the roots as you repot . Leave the plant life dry for a hebdomad or so , then set about to water thinly to reduce the risk of root bunk .
