Why have I never been to the Blithewold mansion and garden before last week ? It is gravely GORGEOUS and just around the turning point ( in Rhode Island ) from our offices in Connecticut . I stumbled upon their beautiful website a few week earlier and thought there was potential for some prissy picture . As it turned out I did n’t have enough time ( several hours ) to take in everything the grounds had to offer . It ’s vast – with everything from a formal repeated border to a well - make rock’n’roll garden . And just when I guess I ’d seen it all , I lash out the corner and was confront with the torso of a Giant Redwood – the largest I ’d run into outside of Redwood National Forest . Apparently John DeWolfe , the landscape painting architect for Blithewold , planted the tree diagram on the grounds in 1911 . Mr. DeWolfe was the superintendent of Prospect Park in NYC at the time and had been growing the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree in a nursery there until it outgrow its location . He decided to relocate the tree and ship it by railing to Rhode Island . Now , 98 years subsequently , the “ Big Tree ” is the tallest giant redwood east of the Rocky Mountains . If you ’re in the area , unquestionably make time to visit this gem .
