Some might call it tyro ’s luck . But it really has more to do with the top - snick growing attainment of the gifted horticulturist in Hortus Forum , Cornell ’s undergraduate horticulture night club .
The club entered 44 plants in various category at the Philadelphia Flower Show . And they brought home 38 ribbons , admit a downhearted ribbon for their Haworthia cooperi .
Plant Sciences Majors Samuel Sterinbach and Alexander Liu and International Agriculture & Rural Development Major Veronika Vogel brought home a blue typewriter ribbon for their Haworthia cooperi and earn 37 other ribbons .

“ That ’s almost unheard of first prison term out . I ’m very gallant of them , ” says Mark Bridgen , theatre director of the Long Island Horticulture Research and Extension Center , who helped organise the club ’s stumble to the show as well as a circuit of nearby Longwood Gardens .
“ Most people do n’t understand how much work it is to grow and enter that many plant , ” he adds . Their entries garnered a lot of skilful will for Cornell . ”

“ We ’re still ecstatic and overwhelmed with delight and gratitude , ” says Veronika Vogel ‘ 21 who along with fellow club members Alexander Liu ’ 20 and Samuel Sterinbach ’ 20 organise the effort . “ We were told that it often takes mass many age of entering before they win a blue ribbon , and we did it in the first year we participated ! ”
Club members carefully packed their 43 entranceway into a minivan to send them from Ithaca to Philadelphia .
Vogel also accent the team effort , crediting Hortus Forum member past and present who chip in to the wellness and beauty of the plant they display . “ Many of the flora we entered ( including the prize - bring home the bacon Haworthia ) are old age old and have had generations of club members contribute to their care , ” she say .

Vogel also adds that their effort also put them on the map with other horticulturists at the show . “ Many people were super excited to have us demonstrate and we acquire lots of very positive feedback , ” says Vogel , who along with Liu and Sterinbach pulled off several late night shifts to select , insert , groom , pack and transport the plant .
“ The students really are to be commended , ” says Bridgen . “ I ca n’t wait to see how they do next year . ”
