Assessing the garden through images
Today ’s photos come from Barbara Owen .
I ’ve been garden this same quarter - Akka since 1969 , though everything about the 1000 has changed in that time . I love the beautiful photos that look in GOPD . This sentence I think I ’d defer something more virtual than beautiful .
I love drift through my garden with a camera , entrance pic of beautiful flowers . Some of my exposure serve a more hardheaded purpose , though , such as garden perspective that maybe grapple to reach my vision for that special space . They are a utile accession to the notes in my garden notebook computer of what I desire to remember from one time of year to the next , and they are grand to look through as we enjoy a “ wintery mixture ” out of doors . Here are some photos and banker’s bill from last summer .

Hellebore(Helleborushybrid , Zones 5–9 ) has lavish leaves for most of the class , but these early bloom greet spring . It would be skillful to separate this one , to transpose any seedlings , to give it all more space , and to corrupt a fellow with light flowers that would show up intimately in the shade .
I have many beds of different varieties of bearded iris , most of them pass on down from my parents ’ gardens many years ago . Although beautiful when they are blooming , they would be felicitous if I commend to flow them a drink of good nematodes to monish the rock drill .
clean haemorrhage heart(Dicentraspectabilis‘Alba ’ , Zones 3–9 ) is such a spectacular centerpiece in a mostly snowy ( with spicy and icteric ) garden . It would be nice to reinforce its ravisher by divide it and letting it have more of the stage .

This was a heavy use for the base of a birdbath after the top expose . Theverbenawas high enough that the coney did n’t feast on this one , but the petunia would have go longer with more reproducible water during the 100 - degree Day in July . I ’m still searching for the enigma to stay fresh petunias and calibraochoa happy through the whole summertime .
Zinnias(Zinnia elegans , yearly ) are a favorite of mine and of the butterflies and bee . My zinnia plant ( and marigold ) are develop from seed I ’ve been collect for almost fifty years . I choose my favorite colors and the biggest , brightest , sturdiest to save for the next class . I seek to commemorate to plant enough so that there will still be flowers to savour when the goldfinches are tearing out the petal to feast on the seeds .
Salvia(Salviasplendens , yearly ) is a garden workhorse . So far the rabbits disregard the seedlings that pop up all over the garden . My salvias are glad to be transplanted into the areas where I require their cheery lustrous red . The hummingbirds also appreciate the flower .

Coleus has so many colouration compounding to choose from . When it ’s glad , I snip off some leading stems and take root them in water . In a few daytime , there are more of them to plant .
Browallia(annual ) is another workhorse . A small four - face pack can fill all the spaces where I want that light blue . Again , I snip off a few stems , root them in piss , and get more plants ! Plus , the rabbit seem to leave this one alone .
Fall asters(Aster novae - angliae , Zones 3–8 ) were a natural endowment from a friend many years ago , and they cue me of how wonderful garden friendships and sharing can be . The Battle of Magenta blossom are a bright contrast to my downslope - color September garden if I ’ve remembered to enfold the plants with chicken telegram so the rabbit ca n’t eat them down to the ground . The bumblebee and honeybees bask the flowers in the declination .

I love the thought across the front grounds from the bench in my “ woods garden , ” but sometimes plants outgrow my initial plan . Theninebark(Physocarpus opulifolius‘Summer Wine ’ , Zones 3–8 ) will be happier if I can transplant it to a space where it has room to produce into its preferred graceful vase shape . The small rhododendron has a branch urgently research for more sunlight as the red maple continues to block more of it . Maybe the rhodie would prefer a different site as well . A garden is always a work in progress .
A last view of the domain I can see from my kitchen and dining room windows . give thanks you , Mother Nature , for planting salvia everywhere . Zinnia bring monarchs , painted peeress , black and yellow swallowtails , and goldfinches to feast . Red dahlias were a gift from another friend many years ago . They are the most long - long-lasting of any that I ’ve grown and are consistently address with beautiful deep red flowers . They provide more tuber than I have way to plant , so again , I can share the talent with others .
